Comfortable Formal Clothing

Comfortable Formal Clothing

Formal attire is usually associated with awful visions of spending evenings stuck in a suit or dress that you can’t walk in, can’t breath in, and certainly can’t eat in. In a society obsessed with being thin and looking glamorous people often forgo any level of comfort when it comes to formal wear for the sake of looking good but fortunately you can have it both ways. There are however a few things you want to be aware of before you head out shopping for your night on the town.

The first and most important thing is that while you want to look good on any formal occasion you don’t want to sacrifice your comfort in the process because you’ll end up having a miserable time and anyone who feels miserable looks miserable too so you won’t accomplish anything by going that route. So go ahead and shop for something that you know will look good on you but remember that it needs to meet your other needs as well. You also don’t want to wear anything that makes you look good but is extremely difficult to wear or move around in. Dresses that are so tight you can hardly breathe in them or so long that you’re constantly dragging and tripping over your own fabric are not the best choices. Suits that pinch, rustle, or make it difficult to sit or stand in for any period of time won’t be a good idea either.

When it comes to formal attire that not only makes you look good but is fun to wear as well you want to take a few things into consideration like how long you’ll be wearing your outfit, any traveling you might have to do in it, any eating or other activities you’ll be doing through the course of the evening, whether or not you’ll be dancing in it and so on.

Once you have a good idea of what activities you’ll be participating in and after you know the details of your formal affair you’ll be able to decide what kind of attire you should be wearing. Dancing requires a dress that can move and that you won’t trip in. A meal means clothing that you can comfortably sit and eat in for a good length of time. You also want to be sure you can stand up and sit down without having any major wardrobe malfunctions. You should be able to go the whole of the evening comfortably in your dress or suit without having to spend a lot of time fixing or adjusting anything on it.

This ties into making sure that you’re choosing outfits and pieces to wear based on comfort and usability versus just looks. If a dress looks great on you but you have to adjust the straps or pull up a hem every ten seconds then it doesn’t actually look that great. You’ll spend your entire evening fidgeting with your outfit and not enjoying yourself. The other end of this is that pieces that we often think look good on us can actually look quite bad if they don’t fit us well (and thus suit our comfort). Clothes that force us to squish and push ourselves into them do not look good along with clothes that require us to wear various garments to make ourselves skinnier in order to fit into them. These are often a recipe for disaster and usually don’t look that good. It’s really easy to see when someone is trying to look a lot thinner than they are and it often back fires making them look even worse than they would if they simply wore something that was a proper fit for them. Don’t buy clothing in the size you want to be and then force yourself to fit into it. Buy clothing in the size you are and learn to be comfortable in your own skin. It’s also a good idea to look into certain colors or styles that look better on you. Dresses with more fabric to them can be very pretty and will often do a great job of camouflaging any flaws you might think you have. They’re also very easy to move in and if you get the right style they can work for many different occasions.

It’s also a good idea to consider what sort of adjustments you’ll have to make to the clothing, if any. It’s a lot better to buy a dress that you fit in then one you’ll have to have let out or taken in all the time because it doesn’t work for you. In this area it’s often a good idea to have clothing custom made for you if the occasion calls for it and this can be especially helpful for someone that struggles to find store sizes that work for them. A lot of times this can be an issue with someone who is too small or short or is built a bit different than most other people are. Having custom formal wear made for you can ensure that it will be comfortable and enjoyable to wear while also looking very good on you.

This is also a good idea for someone who is in the process of losing a lot of weight because afterwards you can simply take the clothing to whoever made it for you and have them adjust the size of it without losing any of the other aspects of it that you love. If you’re going to have to fix minor things on clothing you’ve purchased such as the length of a strap or the height of a hem line it’s best to make sure that you’ll be able to complete the project without spending too much extra on top of the purchase price of the gown and that that adjustment will make the piece wearable for you. There are plenty of people who have purchased lovely outfits that weren’t quite right and convinced themselves they could just make a quick fix and it would be perfect. It rarely is. If you don’t love it in the store when it’s beautifully lit and lovingly displayed then it’s rare for you to love it at home.

Also be aware of any accessories you need to go with your outfit and whether or not they’ll make it any more or less comfortable. This is especially important with shoes which can do considerable damage to your feet if you wear the wrong size or style and can ruin what might have been a perfectly good evening otherwise. Be aware of these types of things and make sure you plan for them in advance.

When it really comes down to it choosing formal wear that is both lovely and comfortable doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. Just be sensible and follow the tips above and you’ll do just fine.
